Strange Food: Elk

strange foods

Just like the title says, I ate some strange (to me) food last night. Elk.

One of our friends’ dad hunts them and always has a freezer full and they finally persuaded us to try it.

It cooks just like a regular steak, so we figured why not? Its a free chunk of meat!

So we looked up a few recipes and most said season to taste and grill. We ended up going with: Garlic, Mustard Powder, and Sea Salt. Neither of us had tried Elk, or any ‘gamey’ type meat before so we wanted to retain as much flavor as possible.

We seared it for 1 minute, per side, on high heat and then cooked for 5-7 minutes per side. A side of veggies and some garlic bread and we had a nice ‘summer’ time meal.

Verdict: Pretty good. Tastes like steak right off but as you chew it you can start to taste the ‘game’ flavor. Not sure if it is something that I would actively seek out to purchase, but for free it was a great quick meal.

try anything weird? I know I am going to have tons more of these when we are on vacation. Weird food that is.
